We are all unique. Perfumes are also unique too. The beautiful thing is that, we can both complement each other. Choosing the right perfume, therefore, should help you mirror your personality, outlook and style.
Occasion and season
Where are you wearing the perfume to? Not one single fragrance fits every occasion. For example, a fragrance suitable for office wear may not be suitable for a birthday party or evening wear. Fragrance for winter may not be suitable for summer or very hot tropical weather. For example, you could use Kenzo Pour Homme in the summer, but may not be suitable for winter. Thus, Perfumes go by occasion and season. One could also throw in multipurpose fragrances suitable for every day, every occasion wear.
For example, for office wear, you may go with something subtle, not too strong and intense in order not to put off your colleagues. If you are going for a party, preferably evening, go with something a little intense. This would help you stand out. If however, you are going for a midday party, a lighter, aquatic scent is recommended. For romantic dates, well, choose something that is not too strong, but surely able to reach out and entice. The deal is that, your date should be able to notice what you are wearing.
Overall, if it feels right for you, by all means follow your senses and emotions.
Price, price, price!
They say good perfumes are not cheap, they say good perfumes can only be afforded by those who can shell out some good money? Is it true? Well, everything depends on the buyer. How much do you want to spend on a perfume? There are people who know their perfumes and are consistent. These kinds of people would spend for that very scent they feel comfortable in. At the same time, you could spend little and still smell amazing. You may also notice that the higher the perfume concentration, the more expensive. for example, Eau de Parfum tends to be more expensive than Eau de Toilette and so forth.
Skin Type
Not all skins are created the same. Let’s be very clear: what smells good on your friend may not smell good on you! Why? Body composition differs. Each person has a unique skin composition that helps to accentuate a fragrance. Thus, know your skin type and body temperature. If you have a dry skin, fragrance would not likely last on your skin. So apply as appropriate. On the other hand, oily skins tend to hold moisture and thus able to prolong a fragrance.
Fragrance Strength (Concentration) Type
Not all fragrances are created equal! Yes, they depend on the amount of ‘perfume’ concentration. Thus, in choosing your perfume, you are likely to hear words like ‘Eau de Parfum’, Eau de Toilette’ and ‘Eau de Cologne’.
Simply put. Eau de Parfum contains more concentration of essential oils followed closely by Eau de toilette and the least of all is Eau de Cologne. Thus, choose according to how intense you want your perfume to be.
Fragrance Group (Categories)
This is the 'scent' itself proper. This is categorized according by the ingredients used by the perfumer. Thus, there is floral, oriental, fruity, aromatic, woody, etc. These categories could further be broken down down into perfume notes. One may settle for a category based on taste, projection and season.
