Perfume, they say is in the name. Or is it
in the scent?
Sometimes, and most times actually, when one wants to buy a fresh bottle of perfume, the first thing that often drives our decision making process is the question whether it is branded or unbranded perfume. In other words, who is the perfumer? Who crafted it?
The question is important because it helps, perhaps to focus our attention, or helps us make a quick decision.
The question is important because it helps, perhaps to focus our attention, or helps us make a quick decision.
Sometimes, as well, we may not not even bother about the brand itself or the perfumer. We may just go ahead and buy, as long as it smells great on us or as long as we feel comfortable wearing it.
This is what I call the branded versus branded perfume wars!
Branded Perfumes:
The use of the
word ‘brand’ may signify different things to many people. But I should just say that
branded perfume as used here is meant to be taken as a Brand that is globally
recognized. A brand that is so popular that it rings a bell to almost anyone or
at least those who care about perfumes. Thus branded perfume is all of the
above and more.
For many perfume
users, branded perfume signifies all that is about perfumes. For some people
Branded perfume signifies Brand meaning, style, passion and to some extent a
sense of belonging. For many people, branded perfume signifies quality.
To some perfume
lovers, branded perfume is the way to go, unless there is no money. In which
case, they may perhaps look elsewhere. Others, however, would rather go hungry
than go about without their Branded signature scent
Unbranded Perfumes:
To some people,
unbranded perfume serves as ideal alternative. In my classification, I use the
term unbranded to mean a product or brand name that does not have global
recognition within the range of products or brands in the market or brands that
are not household names. It should be understood, however, that unbranded
perfumes does not mean ‘no brand’; after all, they do have their brand names under
which they are marketed.
In the perfumery
terminology, unbranded perfumes may also be referred to as niche perfumes.
Unbranded
perfume may not be so popular due in part amongst others to the following. Generally
a user may be hesitant to buy when it is unbranded. This may be because, the
buyer is unsure; not knowing what they are buying or whether they would get
value for money. For example, another reason a perfume lover may be hesitant to
buy unbranded perfume is that the question of quality.
However, a
perfume lover may be inclined to buy unbranded when it is cheap enough. Others
would buy out of curiosity. Perfume connoisseurs, especially adept collectors
may also buy to build their collection.
Another reason
and I think, the most important of all why one would buy unbranded perfume is perhaps
because of the scent itself, as opposed to the price or name. With so many
perfume brands on the market, there may be need for one to stand out from the
pack. Unbranded perfume may do just that! Still this is not to say that branded
perfume cannot accomplish the same goal.
It is just matter of taste and the size of
your wallet
